How to act correctly
Step 1
Secure the scene
Turn on your hazard lights, set up the warning triangle, put on a safety vest before getting out. Keep sufficient distance from the danger zone on rural roads and motorways.
Step 2
First aid, call emergency services if needed
Check whether anyone is injured. Always call 112 if there are injuries. For pure property damage, the other party's willingness to cooperate determines whether to involve the police.
Step 3
Preserve evidence
Photograph both vehicles from several angles, number plates, brake marks and the overall accident scene — the more context, the better the course of events can be reconstructed.
Step 4
Exchange details, note witnesses
Note the name, address and insurer of the other party as well as their number plate. Actively approach witnesses and ask for their contact details.
Step 5
Don't admit fault prematurely
Even out of politeness, don't make statements about fault at the scene or sign an admission of liability — clarification happens afterwards based on the evidence.
Step 6
Don't accept the other party's expert
You have the free choice of expert (§ 249 BGB). Call us before agreeing to an assessment suggested by the insurer.
